The media I used in this piece is acrylic yarn. I often use yarn as a medium because I am most comfortable with crocheting. I believe my skills in crocheting are broad enough to create nearly anything that comes to mind. I also enjoy expanding my skills in crocheting and mastering different techniques. The yarn is supposed to represent the wool that is used to make yarn. My media is representative of man-made materials, and I wanted to incorporate the origin of the material with the piece. By creating a sheep with the yarn, I successfully represented the origin of yarn, a sheep's wool. I believe this project is successful in both aesthetics and its message. The correlation between the piece and the origin of the materials that were used to create it are accurate and meaningful, and the overall piece turned out to look aesthetically pleasing. | I used cotton yarn as a medium for this piece. This piece is also crocheted because I was experimenting in my abilities and improving different techniques I have learned in the past. This art piece is meant to represent transformation and change. I chose a flower because of its many components, petals, and stages of development. I am able to open and close the petals to display the stages of development a flower goes through. Having yarn as a medium helps allow this piece to be easily manipulated and changed. I believe this piece was very successful because it allowed me to improve my crocheting skills and allowed me to see greater potential in the things I can create with yarn. |
What projects or units did you enjoy? What would you add or take away to make the class a better learning experience?
I enjoyed the unconventional art unit. I liked the aspect of the project that we could not use normal art supplies like pencils, paint, or clay. It allowed me to think outside of the box and figure out how to make unconventional supplies into an artistic piece. I think art classes should be more encouraging of using unconventional materials to create art pieces because it allows for a better learning experience for the student to think outside of the box and get a better understanding of their artistic abilities using different materials.
