1. What issue did you pick and why? Summarize your issue and explain why you selected it.
The Issue I chose to address in my art piece is the problems that children with disabilities experience in the classroom. I know many students, including myself, who have been discriminated against in the classroom due to disability, and I wanted to draw attention to the issue with my piece. This is a very personal issue to me because I believe every student should have equal opportunities in education and how they are treated in the classroom by both the students and teachers.
2. How did you plan? Show images of each of the three planning activities you completed.
First, I decided to find three different silhouettes of children to show the main group of people my message is aimed toward. When I was buying canvas, I was thinking of getting a traditional thick one with a wooden frame, but I couldn't find any that came in three packs, so I ended up getting the thinner canvas. After transferring each silhouette image onto the canvases, I colored in the backgrounds and refilled the silhouettes in black. I then labeled each canvas with a disability that I'm highlighting. After that, I wrote quotes around the heads of things people say to these kinds of students throughout their school career.
3. How did you use media (art supplies), images and or text communicate about the issue you selected? How effective is the work you produced?
I decided to use three separate canvases to display the individuality of each person. I wanted each piece to have the ability to be displayed without the others and still convey the same message. The paint colors I chose were also to express the individuality of these people. The purpose of the silhouette is to show that any person could have one of these disabilities without others knowing. I chose to write words around the figures to represent what these people have to deal with when others talk to them, and how they're discriminated against. Based on my feedback on this piece, I believe my work is very effective. People have said they can either relate to these problems or better understand and see the problems that other have to face on a daily basis in school.
