This is another form of relief using a book as the medium. To carve this, I used an exact-o knife and a cutting board to separate the pages to create the depth and texture. I thought this medium was pretty easy to work with, but needed precise planning. If a mistake is made, it may end up being very difficult to fix. I think I was very successful with this piece because of my added lattice texture which is eye catching and allows one to easily detect depth. If I were to do this piece again, I would probably try to be more intricate and precise with my lines and possibly add more depth. Overall satisfaction rating: 3/5
Styrogami is a type of sculpture art involving a Styrofoam cup. My initial reaction of this assignment was, "I'm not creative, I have no idea what to do." I ended up staring at a Styrofoam cup for about ten minutes until I decided to be brave and begin stabbing away with my exact-o and cut out a shape that looked to me like a cloud or puff of smoke. I was immediately hit with the idea of representing what this cup really meant to me. While carving out my shapes, I found that this medium was pretty messy and difficult to work with. I tried my hardest to be as accurate as possible, but a lot of my lines were still jagged. I'm not completely satisfied with the presentation of my piece, but I am happy with the message that goes with it. The synthetic materials industry is very dirty and is ruining the planet we live on; the cracks in the cup represent the damage that has been done to the Earth. If I had to do this again, I probably would have chosen to create something more visually appealing like a flower or ANYTHING ELSE. Overall satisfaction rating: 2/5
